Too busy to take care of your yard? Looking for a Wollongong lawn mowing service?  Or perhaps a Newcastle lawn mowing service?  Let Elleishas Property Services take care of your lawn mowing and garden maintenance needs.

Are you ready for all things summer? With the early summer heat and humidity, it’s important to keep your lawn green and healthy. You might not be able to control the hot weather, but you can improve your grass by preparing ahead of time.

A lush and vibrant yard is a sign of success; it shows that you care about your home and take pride in your property. From fine-tuning your irrigation system to overseeding your lawn, there are several simple tricks to help keep your grass thriving all summer long. Follow these summer lawn care tips to create a beautiful and tidy lawn this season.

Summer Lawn Care Tips

Mow, mow and mow some more.

Frequent mowing is the first and most important step in keeping your lawn healthy. You might have heard that the best time to mow is when the grass is about two inches long, but that rule doesn’t apply to every type of lawn. Instead, you should focus on what looks best in your yard.

Mowing your lawn every two weeks during the summer will keep it at its best (especially on warm-season grasses). When mowing your lawn, you should make sure to stay away from the root system of taller grass to prevent damage. It’s also important to make sure you have the right mower with a sharp set of mower blades for your lawn. If you’re unsure of what mower is best, talk to your local lawn care provider. They can help you determine which mower is best for your lawn.

Water early in the day.

While we’ve all heard that you should water your lawn in the morning, that rule doesn’t apply to all lawns. The best way to water your lawn is to do so early in the day — ideally between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Watering in the early morning has several benefits.

For one, it reduces the amount of water lost to evaporation since the sun isn’t as strong. It also gives the water time to soak into the ground before the day heats up and causes the water to evaporate. If you water in the evening, you risk the water evaporating before your grass has a chance to soak it up.

This is why you should always water your lawn in the early morning to prevent this from happening. You should also consider investing in an irrigation system if your lawn doesn’t receive enough water, but of course you need to consider any local water restrictions. Your lawn will get the right amount of water at the right time if you have an irrigation system.

Fertilise regularly.

Another important step in lawn maintenance is fertilising. Fertiliser is important to lawn health because it provides nutrients that help repair damaged grass and improve the overall health of your lawn. You should fertilise your lawn once every two weeks during the summer. The best time to fertilise is on a Friday, so the fertiliser has the whole weekend to work its magic.

It’s important to choose the right type of fertiliser for your specific type of lawn. For example, if you have bluegrass, you’ll want to use a fertiliser that provides slow-release nutrients. Fertiliser can be purchased at any local home supply store. Look for a fertiliser with a high nitrogen content and apply it according to the package directions.

Don’t forget the water (or irrigation).

When it comes to watering your lawn, less is more. You should only water your lawn once a week and only when necessary. If your lawn is growing fine without deep watering, don’t water it. If you’re unsure whether you should water your lawn, you can use a moisture sensor to measure the soil moisture. If the soil has less than 40% moisture, you should consider watering your lawn. You can also consider investing in an irrigation system to make sure your lawn receives the right amount of water at the right time.

It’s important to note that overwatering can be harmful to your lawn because it can cause root rot. While overwatering is easy to do, there are several ways to prevent it.

  • First, use a timer to set when your system turns on and off. This will help ensure you water your lawn only when necessary.
  • Next, make sure your sprinklers are adjusted to evenly distribute water throughout your lawn.
  • Finally, consider installing a rain sensor in your system. This will prevent your lawn from being overwatered in the event of a rainfall.

Aerate.

While aerating your lawn isn’t enjoyable, it’s an important step in keeping your lawn healthy. Aerating your lawn is simply the process of removing plugs of dirt from the ground. This helps your lawn in a few ways.

First, it allows air, water, and nutrients to get to the roots of your grass. Second, it creates more space for the roots to grow. This is especially important when you have newly seeded lawns or a sodded yard. Third, it helps to break up thatch, which is a layer of decomposing matter at the surface of your lawn that prevents water and nutrients from reaching the deeper roots.

Fortunately, aerating your lawn is simple and can be done with a special tool (like garden fork) that punctures the soil. You can aerate your lawn any time of year, but it’s especially important to aerate your lawn in the summer.

Overseed.

Another summer lawn care tip is overseeding. Overseeding is similar to aerating, but it’s done a bit differently. Aerating involves removing plugs of dirt from the surface of the ground, whereas over-seeding involves adding new seeds to the soil. Overseeding can be done at any time of year, but it’s especially helpful during the summer.

Overseeding is beneficial because it provides new, lush grass that can help shade your lawn, which can lower the amount of water it receives. It can also help to fill in bald or thin areas of your lawn. The best time to overseed is when temperatures are between 10C and 15C. Before you overseed, you should take steps to ensure the soil is prepared. You’ll also want to make sure you have the right type of grass seed for your lawn.
